In a quarter that’s been plagued by supply chain issues and an ongoing pandemic, Lutron’s announcement of their new RadioRA 3 Control System brought with it some much-needed excitement for the industry. Ten years in the making, RadioRA 3 is scheduled to make its debut in January and Lutron has promised the system is a total game-changer. So what’s new? Read on to learn more about the highly-anticipated product line.
In 2020, Lutron gave us a glimpse of their next generation of design and technology with the release of the Sunnata Touch Dimmer. Sunnata features Lutron’s new LED+™ Advanced Technology and a completely updated look, courtesy of a light bar that dims your lights with a touch or a swipe. Now, RadioRA 3 brings the same contemporary light bar design of Sunnata to a full range of first-ever IoT connected controls — dimmers with capacitive touch technology, switches and keypads. Controls are available in wide range of versatile colors and finishes — 24 in all — making it easier than ever to match any home décor. IoT connectivity allows for light control through the free Lutron App, voice assistant, remote or wall control. The light bar’s soft glow makes it easy to locate switches in the dark.
In addition to the complete line of lighting controls, an all-in-one processor powered by PoE, and simpler PC programming software and app-based editing features are among the new features of RA 3. For those already familiar, Lutron describes RA 3 as ‘an improved and re-imagined version of the RadioRA 2 system’ (launched in 2009), that will transform how installers and residential clients look at connected lighting control. RadioRA 3 offers backwards compatibility with most RadioRA 2 and RA2 Select devices, so existing customers can expand their systems with RA 3 controls. We’ll explain these new features a bit more in depth below.
Pros will find the all-in-one processor for RadioRA 3 a life-changer for system set up and installation. The new, more powerful processor combines the functionality of the main repeater and connect bridge of RadioRA 2. It comes with new QuickFind software built-in, which makes locating the processor on the home network during setup much easier. And, it’s Powered by PoE (power over ethernet), so it can be placed centrally in the home without the need for a nearby outlet. It’s recess, shelf, and junction box-mountable for a clean finish and to help keep it protected. Each processor controls up to 200 Lutron devices** with Lutron’s ultra-reliable ClearConnect® RF technology. Coming soon — the ability to pair two RA 3 processors to create 1 system of up to 400 devices.
PoE-enabled router unavailable? Not to worry – the processor kit is sold with the PoE injector included, plus a shelf mount and ethernet cables.
**Up to 200 new RadioRA 3 devices (dimmers, keypads, switches) + 200 compatible RadioRA 2 & RA2 Select devices.
With its new simplified software, RadioRA 3 will save installers valuable time. Pros can now easily manage device count across the total system — no more assigning rooms to individual repeaters. Create floor, room or sub-room hierarchies so the design is intuitive to your clients and reduces data entry by applying programming across devices with one click. Upgrading an RA2 system? Easily convert the existing RadioRA 2 programming to the new RadioRA 3 processor with only a few clicks.
With the new app-based editing features, installers are able to do job site refinements in real time with clients, avoiding unnecessary call backs later. And, Lutron says it’s simple for installers to make changes for their clients post-install with RA 3’s new remote service programming feature.
Lutron already works with more connected brands than any other dedicated lighting control system on the market today. Now, RadioRA 3 takes integration to another level. RA3 comes with Lutron’s LEAP API which embeds system programming directly in the top control brands’ design software, saving hours of programming time.
RadioRA 3 connects with Control4, Crestron, Elan, RTI, Savant, URC, and other major control systems. It also supports integration with all the top smart home brand homeowners ask for — including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Ring Doorbell, Sonos and more. Sync lights with other smart home products so that lighting matches temperature, music and more — for custom comfort levels, all in one place.
